SFE was founded in 2004 by Luis Benavides and Donald Gala, who set out to revolutionize the school foodservice industry—by putting child nutrition first. Drawing from decades of experience working within both small and large school districts throughout the United States, they proposed a new approach to K-12 child nutrition. Then, they began to build a cross-functional team of the most dynamic, committed culinary and K-12 experts in the industry.
The result was SFE (Southwest Foodservice Excellence), a company founded on a simple philosophy: Put child nutrition first—through top quality food, more menu choices and superior onsite partnership—and students will be happy, nourished and ready to achieve their highest potential. In so doing, program participation and school revenues will grow, allowing for a financially sustainable, truly effective school nutrition program.

Our fresh approach, in fact, has fueled national interest and significant growth since 2004. Still exclusively serving the K-12 school community, the company has expanded throughout the south, as well as into the Midwest and East—with more districts added each year.
